Saving Time and Money By Maintaining Your Dishwasher

A dishwasher saves time, water, and counter space when it works well. Still, it needs regular maintenance to keep washing dishes properly. Grease, minerals, and detergent residue can build up inside the machine.

Wash the Filter

The filter is one of the first areas to check. Many dishwashers have a removable filter that catches food particles. When it gets dirty, dishes may come out gritty or cloudy. You may also notice standing water, odors, or poor draining after a cycle.

Remove the filter according to your owner’s manual. Rinse it under warm water and brush away stuck debris. Put it back correctly before running the next load. If the filter looks damaged, we can check it.

Load the Dishwasher Carefully

Careful loading helps water and detergent reach every surface. Place dishes with space between them. Keep tall pans, cutting boards, and bowls away from the spray arms. Blocked spray arms can leave food behind and make the machine work harder.

Scrape food into the trash before loading dishes. You do not need to pre-rinse most modern loads unless your manual says otherwise. Too much leftover food can clog the filter and affect performance. A little scraping makes the whole cycle easier on your dishwasher.

Wipe the Door and Arms

Wipe the door edges, gasket, and interior with warm water and mild soap. You can also use a cleaner approved by your dishwasher’s manufacturer. Pay close attention to the rubber seal around the door. Food and residue often collect there.

Check the spray arms for clogged holes. Food bits and mineral buildup can block the water stream. Use a soft brush or toothpick to clear small openings. Avoid forcing metal tools into the holes. If an arm feels loose or cracked, we can inspect it.

Run a Cleaning Cycle

Run an empty cleaning cycle when the interior smells stale or looks dirty. Use a dishwasher cleaner or manufacturer-approved product. Do not use hand dish soap because it can create suds and leaks.

After the cycle, look around the floor for water. A small leak can damage cabinets, flooring, or nearby trim. Call us if you see leaking, poor draining, or repeated error messages. Quick service can keep one small problem from turning into a larger repair.

Check Hoses, Racks, and Moisture

If the hoses are easy to see, check for leaks, kinks, or wear. Do not pull the dishwasher out if it feels stuck. Racks should slide smoothly and sit level. Damaged rack coating can expose metal and lead to rust.

Leave the door slightly open after a cycle when it is safe to do so. This helps moisture escape. To conclude, a little maintenance helps your dishwasher keep saving you time. If you have concerns or require dishwasher services, contact Polished Appliance Repair in Eugene, OR.
