Every day you put certain appliances to work and the cooler weather will only add to the demand. A measure of seasonal upkeep is all it takes to see results. The following are some ways to ensure your kitchen and laundry equipment operates without a hitch when the weather changes.

Why it is important to do maintenance in the fall in Oregon

You have damp air and falling temperatures to contend with come fall and winter, not to mention the cooking for the holidays. Your oven, fridge and dryer will see their share of use. An appliance breaking down in the thick of a busy season is poor timing at best.

With regular maintenance one can:

  • Lower energy consumption by having things run efficiently
  • Put off a sudden breakdown
  • Get more life out of your equipment
  • See to small matters before they grow into something costly
  • Have a kitchen in order for holiday get togethers

Refrigerator and Freezer

A seasonal check is in order for an appliance that never stops running. Vacuum the condenser coils on the back or bottom of the unit; the motor has to labour harder when dust and pet hair have had their way.

Then look at the door seals. Put a dollar bill in and close the door; if it comes out with little resistance the gasket is worn and cold air is getting out. Verify the settings too, 37 degrees is about right for the refrigerator, 0 for the freezer.

Oven and Range

You do not want the oven to fail on Thanksgiving, yet that is precisely when you will uncover problems from heavy use. Do a proper cleaning and see that the range burners are lighting and heating as they should.

An oven door that does not seal or a burner that will not ignite ought to be dealt with early rather than left to cause stress at the holidays. We service every major brand so we can put right what is amiss.

Dryer

Your dryer is going to be doing most of the work this fall with the change in weather and more laundry. Make it a point to clean the lint trap with each load but also attend to the vent line. A clog there is an energy waster and a fire risk.

Be on the lookout for:

  • Drying times in excess of a cycle
  • A burning odour
  • Lint at the exterior vent
  • The dryer being hot to the touch

Any of these and an inspection is warranted.

Dishwasher and Disposal

Give the interior seals of the dishwasher a wipe and clear the filter ahead of the holiday rush. A cleaning cycle will take care of any buildup responsible for bad smells. As for the disposal, do not put fibrous or greasy scraps in the drain in quantities; it will clog and put strain on the motor.
